M-series Leica fans will be delighted to learn that there is a new addition to the family, the M11. Featuring a ‘multi-resolution’ full frame sensor, the new digital rangefinder body is also accompanied by a range of new accessories.
Once again retaining the unmistakable M-series 35mm rangefinder film camera look that has been around for almost 70 years, the M11 is very much a cutting-edge camera in a number of ways, Headline features include:
- 60-megapixel (native) BSI (backside illuminated) CMOS full-frame sensor
- ISO 64-50,000sensitivity range
- 14-bit colour depth recording
- 15 EV dynamic range
- Electronic shutter option providing exposures as short as 1/16,000th second
- Multi-field metering available in rangefinder mode
- RAW DNG and JPG images recordable at 60, 36 or 18 megapixels (full sensor area)
- New ultra-thin sensor IR/UV filter and colour filter array to optimise use of old lenses not designed for digital sensors
- New 2.3-million-pixel rear touch screen
- No traditional removable baseplate – provides direct access to the battery compartment and SD card slot
- 64GB of internal memory plus one SD card slot
- 1800mAh rechargeable battery – 64% more capacity than previous models
- USB-C charging available
Ergonomic design improvements
Although the body design may, at a glance, look very similar to the familiar M, some subtle ergonomic facets have been blended in.
There is a new optional handgrip that avoids obstructing baseplate access to the battery and SD card. At the same time the handgrip integrates compatibility with Arca-Swiss type quick-release heads.
Visoflex 2 external electronic rangefinder
Another important new option is the 3.7 megapixel Visoflex 2 external electronic viewfinder, which has a 90 degree tilt facility. It also offers a diopter adjustment range of between -4 and +3.
Forthcoming connectivity firmware upgrades
In H2 of 2022 Leica will release a firmware upgrade designed to optimise mobile workflow I related to Leica’s FOTOS app, enabling the embedding of location metadata, image access via Bluetooth, plus improved data transfer rates.
