Leica pulls no punches with 60 megapixel full frame mirrorless SL3

Leica SL3

Leica SL3

Leica has unveiled what some are declaring is the best ever Leica camera, the SL3

However, it’s still as idiosyncratic as your usual Leica

With a 60 megapixel backside-illuminated (BSI) full frame CMOS sensor, that is 5-axis shift stabilised, the new Leica SL3 is one of the highest resolution full frame format mirrorless cameras on the market. And you get phase-detect focusing. It’s priced US$6,800 (€6,300) and is available straight away.

At first glance, the SL3 looks very similar to the now, 5 year old, Leica SL2. But a lot has changed internally. The image buffer has been doubled from 4GB to 8GB. Of course, we have the new sensor, which seems very similar, on paper, to the one you will find in the Leica M11 rangefinder, launched two years ago, plus 315 on-sensor phase-detect focusing points. The suspicion is that it is a Sony IMX455, rather than the 47 megapixel part in the SL2, which probably had Panasonic DNA. The mechanical shutter mechanism has a different ring to it.

Leica SL3

There is now a CF Express card slot alongside one SD-XC slot, and the rear display screen has moved further to the left, displacing the three main control buttons, which are relocated to the right of the screen.

And, now, the SL3 is endowed with an up/down tilting rear display.

So far, so good. But the SL3 is no Ferrari. Its technical shutter shooting rate is limited to 5 frames per second. That wouldn’t have been outstanding 20 years ago. This increases to 15fps in electronic shutter mode. That’s still far from the cutting-edge.

But buying a Leica has never been about being-cutting edge. Depending on who you speak to, it’s about the feel of the camera, the very distinctive and unique Leica design, and of course the optics.

At 60 megapixels, the sensor is knocking on the limit of the pixel pitch to pixel performance limit, but if the sensor is an IMX455, it’s sure to be an awesome performer under most conditions.

It’s also interesting to see how much motion picture capability has advanced up the list of priorities. Maybe this has something to do with Panasonic Lumix, Leica’s key technical partner, and fellow L-mount proponent. The SL3 can shoot up to 8K video, without any clip time constraints.

So, is this the best Leica ever? Probably. Is this the best mirrorless camera, ever? That’s another debate.

PRESS RELEASE

New: Leica SL3

The new mirrorless full-frame system camera from Leica is now available.

Wetzlar, 7th March 2024. In 2015, Leica Camera AG introduced the SL-System, uniquely combining the two worlds of photography and videography. From the beginning, Leica has
focused on partnering with its users and the photographic community to ensure that their products achieve exceptional standards. The result is a system which meets the highest
requirements in image quality, manufacturing quality, and ease of handling. Now, the long-established company presents the next generation of the mirrorless full-frame system: the
Leica SL3.

The rigorous demands of professional photographers have long served as a benchmark and inspiration for the development of the system, in particular the Leica SL3. The result is an
extremely versatile camera, offering unprecedented image quality in both photography and videography. The SL3 combines state-of-the-art technology, extraordinary design, and masterly
manufacturing quality – more compact, lighter, and even more user-friendly than its preceding model. The new functions of the Leica SL3 are based on an ongoing dialogue with professionals,
which is highly valued and cultivated by the company in the ever-changing world of photography.

At the core of the Leica SL3, you can find the BSI CMOS full-frame sensor with Triple Resolution Technology, which is safely protected in a solid all-metal body with elegant leather. To meet a
variety of photographic requirements, the sensor records raw files in DNG or JPEG format with a resolution of either 60, 36 or 18 MP. In each case, the full sensor surface is used. Together
with the dynamic range expanded to 15 f-stops and the impressive ISO range from 50 to 100,000, the SL3 delivers remarkably detailed images in outstanding quality – in all light
conditions.

With phase detection (PDAF), depth mapping (Object Detection AF), and contrast recognition (Contrast Detection AF), the innovative autofocus system of the SL3 combines the strengths
of three technologies to create razor-sharp pictures even in dim light. In addition, intelligent subject recognition supports the photography of dynamic scenes.

The lens bayonet, which is based on the L-Mount standard developed by Leica, facilitates the use of outstanding lenses from all of the Leica camera systems. Additionally, it is compatible
with a diverse array of ultra-wide to super-telephoto zoom lenses offered by L-Mount alliance partners. Therefore, the lens bayonet guarantees extensive system compatibility for the Leica
SL3. Specifically, the exceptional potential of the renowned Leica M-Lenses is fully harnessed, thanks to the unique design of the image sensor and an external light sensor. The integrated
in-body image stabilisation further broadens the scope of application for M-Lenses.

The EyeRes® viewfinder of the Leica SL3 is equipped with an elaborately manufactured optical system made of glass lenses. It always shows the subject crystal clear with up to 120 frames
per second and a resolution of 5.76 million pixels. The live preview enables full control over the exposure and composition of images even before releasing the shutter. Another new feature is
the tiltable 3-inch high-res touchscreen with a high-quality tilting mechanism. Even more creative possibilities can be achieved thanks to its additional viewing angles.

Videos are recorded in a resolution of up to 8K, supported by efficient codecs such as H.265 and ProRes by Apple. A dedicated time code interface allows for professional image and sound
synchronisation on set. Throughout this process, the new Maestro-IV processor with L² technology easily handles the vast amounts of data, resulting in pictures with magnificent
colour rendering as well as excellent noise performance.

Another highlight is the new user interface of the Leica SL3. Every optimisation is aimed at enhancing user comfort such as ergonomics, tactile feel, and menu navigation. As a result, the
grip, button layout, and overall camera design have been refined to further promote intuitive handling. The updated, streamlined icon and menu design offer a clear structure, facilitating
even easier navigation. The distinct separation of photo and video modes proves especially beneficial as it is aided by a specific colour code for differentiation: red for photo mode and
yellow for video mode.

Furthermore, the camera’s main functions can be completely adapted to individual needs. The freely assignable FN keys and the optimised touch interaction in the menu add to the intuitive
and comfortable operation of the camera. When photographing and filming, the SL3’s user interface aligns itself in landscape or portrait format, depending on the camera position. Thanks
to the convenient handling, improved ergonomics, robust design, and IP54 certification, photographers can focus on capturing the shot in any weather and environment. At the same
time, the new SL3 is noticeably lighter and more compact than its predecessors and is even more comfortable to use.

The Leica user experience undergoes continuous refinement. Regular firmware updates, influenced by valuable customer feedback, are seamlessly delivered to the SL3 through the
Leica FOTOS app. This ensures the camera stays current and future-proof in a user-friendly manner.

The camera’s new interface and improved connectivity ensure a seamless professional workflow. There are slots for the memory cards CFexpress type B and UHS-II-SD, a USB-C port
for high-speed data transmission, tethering, and power supply as well as a full-size HDMI 2.1 output for external monitors or recording equipment. Additionally, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi with
MIMO technology ensure a stable and fast connection to the Leica FOTOS app. As a certified Apple “Made for iPhone® and iPad®” accessory, the Leica SL3, together with the included USB-
C cable, enables a direct connection to Apple products.

The new BP-SCL6 battery, along with the separately available double charger, offers ample capacity. This dual charger allows for the simultaneous and faster charging of two batteries.
The double charger and the additional battery are available individually or as an attractive set. Moreover, the accessories within the SL-System now include a new handgrip and a DC coupler.
The DC coupler can be inserted into the camera’s battery slot to ensure a continuous power supply via USB-C. The new carrying strap with an innovative attachment and a hard-wearing
wrist strap for the hand grip have also been specially designed for everyday professional photography use.

Conclusion: In close partnership with photographers, Leica Camera AG has taken the SL- System to a new level. With an optimised design, efficient user interface, and the versatile L-
Mount bayonet, the Leica SL3 is a highly modern, intuitive full-frame camera with outstanding image quality. It combines precision, the best materials, and unprecedented manufacturing
quality “Made in Germany”. Robust and reliable, it masters every challenge in photo- and videography, setting new standards in terms of user comfort and a seamless professional
workflow with extended interfaces, improved connectivity, and useful accessories.

The Leica SL3 is now available globally at all Leica Stores, the Leica Online Store, and authorised dealers. The retail price will be €6,800.00 including VAT.

ZY redesigns Mitakon 50mm f/0.95 for Leica M

DPNow comment: The Mitakon Speedmaster 50mm f/0.95 is a remarkable standard lens objective that ZY Optics is rightfully very proud of. One of the brightest 35mm/FF lenses ever produced, this lens permits very creative control of limited depth field blur. Available in silver or black finish, this really is a new lens rather than a re-packaged version of previous Nikon and Sony E-fit models. The optics have been upgraded and Leica’s mechanical control linkage is fully supported. Perhaps besy of all, in Leica terms, at $799, this is a real bargain-priced lens.

ZY Optocs press release:

ZY Optics adds the Leica M version to its popular Mitakon Speedmaster 50mm f/0.95 line-up

Mitakon 50mm f/0.95 Leica M

ShenYang, 25th Jan, 2021 – ZY Optics, the leading fast-aperture lenses manufacturer in China, has announced the launch of the Mitakon 50mm f/0.95 lens in Leica M mount. The lens is specially redesigned to work well with Leica M camera systems and supports rangefinder coupling for focus assistance. The lens is also compatible with 3rd party Autofocus Adapter where a Autofocus performance can be enjoyed when used with Nikon Z or Sony FE cameras.

Great Control over Depth of Field

Its f/0.95 maximum aperture makes the lens one of the fastest lens in the market for Leica cameras. A shallow depth of field endows pictures with an enchanting and dreamy ambience, with the main character perfectly separated from the background. Soft and enticing bokeh can be formed in this picture, adding additional romantic sense to the picture. Its 9 rounded blades aperture creates a soft and perfectly circular bokeh that all photographers are craving for.

Superior Image Quality

Compared to the Nikon Z/ Canon RF/ Sony FE version, the image is further improved by the new 11 elements in 8 groups optics formula, bringing high definitions and sharpness even at wide open aperture. Colour fringing and chromatic aberration are greatly suppressed thanks to the addition of extra-low dispersion elements. The colour rendered is also carefully calibrated to manifest a greater contrast on Leica cameras. Unlike other f/0.95 lenses where the sharpness is only optimized at certain distances, the new Mitakon 50mm has an outstanding sharpness at both portrait distances as well as infinity, making it one of the most versatile 50mm lens in the market.

Extraordinary Night Photography

The ultra-wide f/0.95 aperture is also tailor-made for night photography. With the improved sharpness and coma correction, the new Speedmaster outperforms any 50mm lenses in the market in the genre of night photography.

Full Support of Leica Cameras’ Rangefinder Coupling Focusing System

One special feature about Leica cameras is their unique Rangefinder Coupling system. The new Speedmaster is designed to perfectly support the rangefinder system of the Leica cameras to achieve a more accurate, convenient, and quicker focusing performance through the camera’s viewfinder. More precise control of manual lens shooting is not impossible now.

Autofocus Realization with Third Party Adapters

A hybrid focusing performance can now be enjoyed. For Nikon Z and Sony E mount users, there are a few automatic adapters in the market which can turn Leica M-mount manual lenses into autofocus. Users can now take advantage of the short-flange distance of Leica M mount and experience a new focus performance with these AF adapters. Both Megadap MTZ11 and Techart TZM-01/LM-EA7 are supported. The adapters can support AF-S, AF-C, AF-F and face/eye detection with IBIS of the cameras, making focusing with f/0.95 as painless as ever.

The link below shows how the new Mitakon Speedmaster 50mm f/0.95 works with Megadap and Techart adapters in autofocusing (2:38-3:27): https://youtu.be/WZ_O0g_5xB4?t=158

Impeccable finishing with 2 colors available

Taking care of the high aesthetic standard of all Leica users, both matte black and silver version are available to best match with the beautiful Leica cameras. In addition, the lens will be shipped with a specially designed black leather box. The lens is equipped with a delicate and durable metallic exterior like all other Mitakon lenses. A solid feel of precision is given by a smoot aperture control ring and engraved markings on the lens body.

Pricing and availability

The new Mitakon Speedmaster 50mm f/0.95 for Leica M mount is available to order on ZY Optics official website (https://zyoptics.net/) and other authorised resellers. It is available to ship. The suggested retail price (ex-VAT) in US is $799 and it varies from country to country.

As part of the LUMIX S series, Panasonic aims to release them on the global market next spring, as announced during Photokina 2018.

For 100 years, Panasonic has strived to help realize better lives for customers around the world by responding to their needs. Working on the concept of creating a new culture of photography for a digital age, in 2008 Panasonic released the G1, the world’s first*2 Digital Single Lens Mirrorless camera. Over the last ten years, Panasonic has continued to lead the industry with product innovations. This has included the world’s first*3 camera supporting 4K video recording, and cameras equipped with the Dual I.S. image stabilization system; combining stabilization both inside the camera unit and the lens.

In more recent years, the sharing of video via social media has gained in popularity. More and more people are also enjoying a hybrid of photos and videos, expanding the range of expression in the production of content. A new type of camera has been needed for this new field that goes beyond the boundaries of photos and videos.

Against this backdrop, Panasonic adopted the concept of ‘Fuel the Photographers’ creative vision’ to develop a Digital Single Lens Mirrorless camera with a comprehensive focus on this need. These cameras will form the LUMIX S series with a powerful sense of striving to provide specialized value to customers desiring high expressiveness.

The cameras have the user-friendliness and robustness essential as tools for photography or videography by professionals. They incorporate an entire array of our technology refined over a century in the consumer electronics business and ten years developing Digital Single Lens Mirrorless cameras. Such innovations include digital technology like image or signal processing, plus optical and heat treatment technology and more. 4. A double slot for XQD memory cards and SD memory cards, a first for Panasonic

  5. A rugged triaxial tilt LCD: emphasizing ease of use and supporting professional photography and videography.

  6. An unlimited scope of applications: Leica Camera’s L-Mount, making it possible to use replacement lenses that meet the L-Mount specifications of the partners*4 Leica Camera and Sigma. Expressiveness is further enhanced by increasing options for replacement lenses.

Panasonic will also expand its line-up of LUMIX S series compatible lenses, developing more than ten by 2020, including a 50 mm/F1.4 fixed-focus lens, 24-105 mm standard zoom lens, and 70-200 mm telephoto zoom lens.

For the LUMIX G series of Micro Four Thirds Digital Single Lens Mirrorless cameras, Panasonic will begin developing a Leica DG VARIO-SUMMILUX 10-25 mm F1.7 lens that will achieve the world’s first*5 zoom with a constant aperture value of F1.7. On top of this, the support services for professional photographers and videographers, which started in Japan in April last year, will be available in selected European markets and the United States this fiscal year.

The GH5, G9, and GH5S high-end Digital Single Lens Mirrorless cameras that Panasonic has steadily released since 2017 have already gained a solid reputation among professionals and high-level amateurs across the world for the quality of their pictures and ability to capture the vitality and beauty of life. This success is thanks to Panasonic’s world’s-first*6 support

for 4K 60p/50p video recording, and the world’s fastest autofocus*7 function using the company’s proprietary DFD technology. Panasonic will continue to provide new value to customers through the unique features of the compact yet high-definition LUMIX G series, while also reaching the professional market through the introduction of the full-frame LUMIX S series and the greater reach of our support system. Introducing the Leica M10: slimmest ever digital M delivers enhanced performance, intuitive handling and direct control

18 January 2017

Leica Camera has today announced the M10: the latest milestone in the Leica M rangefinder portfolio. This iconic camera system has once again set new standards with a perfect balance of long- established tradition and technical innovation, while embodying the true essence of photography like no other camera.

Although its features have been adapted to meet the precise needs of contemporary photographers, the essential principles of the renowned M-System have been meticulously retained. Every single component and technical detail is focused uncompromisingly on photography. With its compact dimensions, improved performance and intuitive handling, the Leica M10 has established a new landmark in the ongoing history of the legendary Leica M.

The form factor: analogue dimensions enter the digital age

Many photographers working with analogue Leica M cameras have expressed their interest in a digital M with the same ergonomic features and size that fits perfectly in the hands. With the Leica M10, this wish has become a reality, with a top plate depth of just 33.75mm – four millimetres less than its closest relative, the Leica M (Typ 240). The Leica M10 is now the slimmest digital M of all time.

The rangefinder: a precise window on the world

The rangefinder has always played a significant role in the heritage of the Leica M-System. Several key aspects of this legendary focusing technology have been further optimised in the Leica M10. To improve the view of the subject being captured, the field of view has been enlarged by 30 per cent and the magnification factor has been increased to 0.73. For eye-relief, the optimum distance of the eye from the viewfinder eyepiece has also been lengthened considerably. Thanks to a 50 per cent increase in this distance, the viewfinder is much more comfortable to use, particularly for photographers who wear glasses.

The sensor: the digital canvas

The key component of the Leica M10 is the 24 MP, full-frame CMOS sensor developed specifically for this camera, offering significant improvements in all image performance parameters: impressive dynamic range, excellent contrast rendition, exceptional sharpness and fine detail resolution. Its unique pixel and micro-lens architecture enables a particularly large aperture, ensuring rays of light hitting the sensor even from the most oblique angles are precisely captured by its photodiodes – this has been further improved compared to its predecessor. The glass cover plate of the sensor acts as an infrared cut-off filter, therefore avoiding undesirable refraction of incoming light with additional layers of glass. The omission of a low-pass filter also ensures the Leica M10 delivers maximum sharpness, leading to significantly enhanced imaging results, especially in the case of wide-angle and very fast lenses.

Thanks to the new design of the Leica M10 sensor, the ISO sensitivity range has been expanded, allowing exposures at values between ISO 100 and 50,000, with considerably improved noise characteristics at higher ISO settings. The Leica M10 opens up entirely new genres of photography and delivers exceptional imaging performance even in challenging lighting conditions.

Image processing electronics: the next quality level

The latest-generation Maestro II image processor incorporated in the Leica M10 represents state-of- the-art, advanced processor technology. Combined with the new 24 MP sensor, it ensures that all exposures are captured with exceptionally brilliant image quality. Thanks to its 2GB buffer memory and continuous shooting at up to five frames per second at full resolution, photographers will never again miss the decisive moment. The Leica M10 is the fastest M-Camera ever made.

Furthermore, the processor allows the loupe function to be freely positioned for even better sharpness assessment. This new function can be used both on the camera’s monitor screen, and in conjunction with the Visoflex electronic viewfinder (EVF) with 2.4 MP resolution. The viewfinder features a swivel function, enabling shooting from unusual angles, and an integrated GPS module for the geotagging of image files.

Intuitive handling – focused on the essentials

Since the beginning, Leica M-Cameras have always focused on the essentials of photography. This principle has been conscientiously pursued in the Leica M10, setting new standards in intuitive handling and rapid access to the most relevant settings: for example, the controls on the back are limited to a single joystick control and just three buttons for Play, Live View and Menu. Particular settings can be selected according to personal preferences and photographic needs via a freely- configurable Favourites Menu.

One of the most distinctive features of the Leica M10 is the ISO setting dial on the top plate. For the first time in a digital Leica M, all essential shooting parameters such as focusing, aperture, shutter speed and ISO value can be selected manually without using the menu – or even switching on the camera – ensuring even more direct control and greater discretion when shooting.

WLAN module for wireless transfer and sharing

The Leica M10 is the first M-Camera with integrated WLAN connectivity. This enables the fast, wireless transfer of pictures to Apple mobile devices, where they can be edited, posted and shared on social networks, for example. The Leica M-App also allows the direct transfer of RAW data in DNG format to mobile devices for further processing with suitable apps from iOS Version 10.2. The Leica M10 can also be remotely controlled by WLAN from a smartphone or tablet, making it easy to capture pictures from unusual angles or avoid camera shake when shooting with longer shutter speeds.

Leica M10: A further step towards perfection

Oliver Kaltner, CEO Leica Camera AG, explains, “The Leica M is the heart, the backbone and the soul of Leica Camera. The Leica M10 unites state-of-the-art technology and exceptional optical performance with a conscious focus on the traditional advantages of the unique Leica M rangefinder system. In this, the innovative camera and its concentration on the functions essential to photography set new standards, while its exceptionally lean handling concept takes us a further step towards absolute perfection. Made in Germany and made by Leica – the Leica M10 stands as an outstanding brand statement for the finest arts of engineering, highest quality and craftsmanship.”

Dr. Andreas Kaufmann, majority shareholder and chairman of the supervisory board of Leica Camera AG, emphasised, “The new M, the M10! Not a camera for everyone – but increasingly a camera for people who love a system that is built for the future while maintaining consistent compatibility with its past. The rangefinder system lets me frame and compose my pictures. The rangefinder system lets me tread in the footsteps of the world’s greatest photographers. The rangefinder system lets me create photographs with my own visual style. The new M10 and the wealth of present and past Leica M-Lenses – products that awaken and fulfil the desires of every photographer.”
